Awareness and Energy

When I joined Heartfulness way of Meditation I had a lot of trouble trying to stay calm, not drown in a deluge of thoughts. The minute I sat down to meditate every event, past, long past, future and distant future sought attention. I asked my trainer, and she had advised me to treat these intruding thoughts as passing clouds. They come and will go away, if we do not pay attention to them. They recede and stop troubling us. It did work, but I realized that all I was doing during meditation was treating my thoughts as unwelcome guests and waiting for them to go away. I was not feeding them, but the thoughts themselves were way too many, and my energy was spent in this hide and seek game. It was not a pleasant experience and my motivation to pursue meditation did not last very long, because I felt tired instead of refreshed! Every day I would sit down with determination, and every time by the end of meditation I would conclude that I was wasting my time.
Treating my multitude thoughts as unwelcome guests was also draining my energies and not helping me as much as I wanted. I needed more help, and some new tools too.

That’s when I came across a video where new age guru, Dandapani, said, “Where your awareness goes, your energy flows!”. And this one line has kind of worked miracles for me.
Whenever I feel my mind wandering, I catch myself and tell myself, where my awareness goes, my energy flows! Where do I want to invest my limited energies? In the past, which I cannot change? In the future which is unknown? Or do I stay alert, aware about the present, and give this moment my cent percent? Me being alive and in the moment helps me keep a constant vigil over myself. Not just during meditation, I ask this question of my self many times over the course of the day.
This mindful question to myself has resulted in thought free meditation, focused work, more free time, and more energy through out the day.
