Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive relates to mental processes; all that occurs in the mind like thinking, recollection, dreams and memory. Behavior relates to all that the person does, acts upon. The interactions, responses, reactions, the problem-solving skills and ability to resolve issues or tackle situations all these tell us about the behavior of the person. Therapy can be said to be the remedial measure taken, or the systematic approach to combat a disorder or ailing condition.

Thus, CBT is using therapy to modify or change the (wrong, self-defeating) behavior and resultantly change the thinking (to progressive and optimistic) of the individual. CBT is diverse and adapts to the current needs of the client. So, there is no one standard way or one technique that may be used during therapy.

We have a habit of weaving a web around ourselves. Over the years this self- created web becomes a noose and before we realize we are trapped in it. This web thus hinders our forward movement, creates phobias, keeps us depressed or any other disorder which we create out of own misguided thinking and behavior patterns. CBT helps us remove the connection between negative situations, our repetitive reactions to them and helps bring a change in our thinking. It helps us think differently, focus on our present issues and empowers the person to resolve these situations and self -created webs. CBT helps us break away from the web, and in case we create a new web, CBT helps us or enable us to walk away or break free from such other tricky situations too.

The session takes 40 minutes to an Hour. The client works collaboratively with the practitioner. CBT is very interactive, and dynamic. The client is part of the process willingly, every step of the journey. We have homework, exercises and Journal keeping as an active part of a CBT therapy process.

Ways and Techniques
Teaching and learning coping skills; and problem-solving solutions: Clients are taught coping techniques. For example, a client who is going through depression may be asked to write a journal recording his/ her thoughts. Later, this journal can be explained more realistically and help break the downward spiral of the client.

Changing Behaviors and Beliefs: Once a new strategy is learnt and the client can cope; this helps in the long run. The client is able to make a change in behavior and attitude. Continuing with the same example of depressed client: If he/she used to see himself/herself as a flawed member, inferior this can change to thinking of oneself as ‘not really flawed’ or that these thoughts are just thoughts, need to be ignored. Gradually, a new image and a new attitude can be developed which may allow the person to see oneself as not depressed, ordinary even.

A new form of relationship: CBT brings the client into a kind of therapeutic relationship. And this therapy allows the client to always be actively involved in the “making changes process”. Because, the therapist works with the client, seeks his/her opinion, viewpoint and steer the therapy in the required direction. The client reveals many personal issues in front of the therapist with the confidence that the therapist is non-judgmental, this is a burden off the shoulders of the client.

Solving Life Problems: Many old and long-standing problems are addressed and get cured through CBT. The long-standing depression may have prevented the client from forming any meaningful relationships so far. But with therapy this can change and way for new / better social and personal life is paved.

Dealing with Negative Thoughts: This therapy is based on Epictetus quote that it is never the events that upset us, but the meanings we give them or allow them to have over us. Thus, if our thoughts are negative, they blind us to all positive actions and new learnings. This therapy helps us break them down (the many disturbing thoughts) into more manageable smaller images. This enables the person to getter a better picture of how each emotion is connected to which thought and how it finally affects the behavior of the individual.
